A lovely large (39 × 27) double plate map of the Caribbean with the Bahama Islands and Florida. Published in Amsterdam in 1740 by Reiner and Joshua Ottens. All original color with full margins on laid paper. The second plate: Nova Isthmi Americani qui et Panamiensis item Dariensis Tabula in qua Urbes Porto Beelo, Panama et Carthagena. Note: I love how Florida is illustrated as being a series of smaller islands. DM for price or contact me for more information.

The Small Bittern

Beautiful hand-colored engraving from Mark Catesby's 18th-century work, The Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands. The print features a green heron perched on a branch alongside a White Ash tree. Mark Catesby published the first natural history of the New World in 1734 in London. He spent a little over three years in the Carolina Lowcountry, traveling as far south as Fort Augusta and inland to the Greenville/Spartanburg area. Many more Catesby plates in inventory from the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd editions — birds, botanicals, fish, and other natural history subjects. Polignac Melon — Pomona Britannica

An original stipple etching from George Brookshaw's celebrated Pomona Britannica series, published 1817. Hand-colored in watercolor, the print depicts a striped melon on a vine with yellow blossoms. Presented in a hand-carved, finished-corner frame with 22kt gold leaf — ready to hang. Frame is antique with minor scratches, carefully repaired.
