Libri Quatuor, was first published in Rome in 1646. The work contained one hundred etched and engraved plates. The Hesperides was the first book entirely devoted to citrus fruit. According to Benesch, Ferrari 's work was "illustrated by all the important Roman baroque painters of classicist leanings. " The etched plates of citrus fruit were drawn and engraved by Cornelis Bloemaert, who served his apprenticeship under Crispijn de Passe and whose patrons were Cortona and the Barberini. Hunt describes him as "one of the great Dutch seventeenth-century botanical artists". The Hesperides also contains three plates illustrating gardening tools.
